On Thursday, 5th of October 2017, Professor Dr Catherine Ho Soke Fun from AAGBS received a prestigious award from the Ministry of Higher Education, a recognition by two prestigious indexing agencies – Clarivate Analytics and Elsevier, for the Outstanding National Research Award in Islamic Banking. The “Malaysia’s Research Star Award 2017” was given away by the Minister of Higher Education, Dato’ Seri Idris Jusoh at Putrajaya International Convention Center (PICC), Putrajaya.
The accolade has made AAGBS and UiTM proud as Prof Dr Catherine is a professor of finance at AAGBS and currently the Deputy Dean (Academic) of the school. Holding this position and bearing the responsibilities of a lecturer, an advisor to master and doctoral students, a mother, and a wife clearly have not deterred her from finding time amidst her busy schedule to continue her research and publication work specializing in International and Islamic Finance.
Professor Dr Catherine is deserving of the award, having received the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence (International), awarded by Emerald Group Publishing Limited last year for her publication on “International Comparison of Shari’ah Compliance Screening Standards: A New Paradigm” and she was a Fulbright Research Scholar (International) sponsored by the U.S. Department of State and Malaysian-American Commission Educational Exchange (MACEE). This time her paper on the “Performance of Global Islamic versus Conventional Share Indices: International Evidence” has been popularly cited globally. Receiving this award is indeed a great recognition for her tireless efforts in the Islamic Banking and Finance research areas. She believes that researchers, academia and the industry must continue to work together in order for Malaysia to continue its position as the global Islamic finance hub. For this, AAGBS staff and students congratulate her and hope that the award she received would be an inspiration for other researchers from the school and university to work towards research excellence.
