On 8 April 2019, AAGBS had the honour to have our namesake Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Utama Haji Arshad Ayub to meet the School’s students and faculty members during the AAGBS April Talk Series. During the event, Tan Sri delivered an inspiring speech about how he rose from poverty to where he is right now, a rag to riches story. Born to rubber-tapper parents, he beat all odds to live a life of comfort now through his perseverance in his studies, career and business ventures.
He shared with the staff and students how he fought hardship, never once had he given up despite facing challenges. His experience living on minimal allowance while studying abroad with a family to feed, taught him about the importance of savings and that he wanted the students to value money as much as how he valued it then and now. Given his vast experience in academia, business ventures and linkages with the industry, he imparted the lessons learned to the audience. Among his many aspirations is to see the success of the Bumiputera in business. He credited his success partly to his willingness to take risks, the accessibility to credit, and to never give up when broken. The audience was greatly inspired by his stories. Tan Sri reminded the audience a number of times that he did not want to talk about wisdom without his failings - for one shall not have wisdom without experiencing failures. What a wise and humble man indeed, and a symbol of true grit.
