Sabbatical leave Experience in Stuttgart, Germany - Prof. Dr. Syed Jamal Abdul Nasir Syed Mohamad

Working with a German professor was a great experience as he gave me full empowerment to do my research. As a result, I managed to design my research based on my creativity but for sure his advice was so useful especially in the data collection process as it was dealing with the local respondents who I had to understand their culture in order to get their cooperation to respond to my research questionnaire.

I was so lucky as I had been given a chance to teach ‘Leadership’ course for the international program at the postgraduate level. It was a great teaching experience dealing with students from different countries together with German students. Since then I have been appointed as a visiting professor to teach the same subject for summer class every year. Being a visiting professor, I have learned a lot in terms of the work culture, students’ learning styles, technology, system and work ethics in which it can be applied in our country. I have been appointed as thesis examiners too for the Master of Management program which allowed me to learn many things in terms of the thesis evaluation technique.

After a year of my sabbatical leave there are a few things that I can conclude as follows: -

  • Our expertise can actually be expanded at the international level such in the Europe countries.
  • We need to change our mindset to be more independent, ethical, competent and productive.
  • International networking plays a very important role in our self-development
