Research Ethics

The Research Ethics Committee (REC) of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) was established to oversee all of the research being conducted in this institution with the goals to produce valid results as well as ensuring the welfare, dignity and rights of research participants. It was approved by the Vice-Chancellor of UiTM in 2004. Currently, the REC is a unit under the Office of Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation). The REC consists of 13 members from UiTM, other academic institutions and also from the public. Since its inception, the REC has received many applicants and as of November 2019, the number of applicants received is 662. Meetings are held on the third Tuesday of every month.

The specific objectives of the REC are to examine ethical issues in research proposals and to ensure that the research projects conducted at UiTM are following the national and international guidelines stipulated in the Good Clinical Practice Guideline, Ministry of Health (MOH), Malaysia and the Declaration of Helsinki, World Medical Association (WMA).

All research proposals involving human subjects in UiTM must be approved by the UiTM REC prior to the commencement of the research. Research involving facilities of the MOH requires approval from the Medical and Research Ethics Committee (MREC) of the MOH.
